Pediatric Eye Health

One of the most common challenges in children is that they may not be able to clearly describe their symptoms. Many important eye conditions can develop at an early age; however, with early diagnosis and appropriate treatment, successful outcomes can often be achieved.

How should eye health be managed for children aged 0–16?

The first eye examination should be performed at 2–3 months of age. This examination helps screen for congenital eye diseases.

Afterwards, children should have their next exam at 1 year of age, followed by annual follow-ups. This helps detect and manage existing or potential eye problems more easily.

What are the signs of vision problems in children?

Eye misalignment (strabismus)

Not tracking objects

Redness or excessive tearing

Eye tremor (nystagmus)

Squinting or closing one eye

A white or cloudy appearance in the pupil (which should normally appear black)

Holding objects very close to the eyes

Tilting the head to one side while looking

Frequent eye rubbing

Premature birth

Family history of amblyopia (lazy eye)

Family history of refractive errors or eye disorders

If any of the above signs are present, the child should be seen without delay by an eye specialist with expertise in pediatric eye diseases (pediatric ophthalmologist).
